Leaf Hairpin and Barrette Forged to Finish Wearable Art

from $44.99
Hand forged in rural Appalachia by artist blacksmith Carter Conley, This organic looking leaf hair pin starts as a few inches of 1/2" round stock. One end of this chunk of steel is forged into the leaf finial while the rest of the material is drawn out to become the hair pin. After forging the leaf veins are added using chisels I've forged for the task, after veining the leaves are given some shape to make them more organic and lifelike. The Hair pins are around 7 inches overall length. Select a small or large barrette depending on you hair type, quantity, and thickness. I use the smallest diameter steel possible for the barrettes to keep the overall weight down. Each Leaf will be slightly different with various nuances while retaining the same overall aesthetic. After forging the forge scale is removed and the pieces are coated with a beeswax based mixture at a low heat to give a nice looking finish that also helps prevent rust. Iron is the Traditional 6 year wedding anniversary gift, Steel is the 11th year. The words Iron and Steel are almost always used interchangeably in Blacksmithing due to the availability of materials Items that would have been made from Wrought Iron, are now made from mild low carbon steel, the closest we as modern smiths can find readily available.
