This unique sculpture was hand forged by artist blacksmith Carter Conley in rural Appalachia. The square knot body was forged from two sections of 3/8" thick steel, then forge welded together to "tighten" the knot, The head is a Forged Overhand knot. The excess material from the ends of the square knot were then forged into representations of hands and feet. The base was forged out of 1/4" thick steel plate, a cross peen hammer was used to create the textured edge. This is the type of display piece that gets people thinking "how did they do that"?. After forging and assembly the sculpture is cleaned with a wire wheel to remove forge scale, and clear coated to give a nice looking long lasting finish. Iron is the Traditional 6 year wedding anniversary gift, Steel is the 11th year. The words Iron and Steel are almost always used interchangeably in Blacksmithing due to the availability of materials Items that would have been made from Wrought Iron, are now made from mild low carbon steel, the closest we as modern smiths can find readily available.
