Feather Hairpin Forged to Finish Wearable Art
from $44.99
Growing up I was part of a Cherokee cultural group called the Ani Tsalagi. The group taught all about the culture including the dress, music , food , ceremony , and language. A big theme was native pride and being proud of your indigenous roots. These unique feather hair pins are my way of remembering those that taught me so much. Each hair pin is individually hand forged in rural Appalachia using traditional tooling and techniques. Starting as a few inches of 3/8" thick steel the first step is to forge the rough shape of a feather. After forging the feather to shape , chisels and texturing tools are used to create the lines and cuts. The rest of the material is then forged into a long thin taper to become the hair pin. After forging the hair pin and barrette (if selected), both pieces are cleaned with a wire wheel to remove forge scale, and to give a shiny silver finish. After cleanup the last step is to apply a wax based finish that looks great and helps prevent rust.. Choose a small or large barrette according to your hair type, quantity, thickness etc. I use the smallest diameter steel possible for the barrettes to keep the overall weight down. Iron is the Traditional 6 year wedding anniversary gift, Steel is the 11th year. The words Iron and Steel are almost always used interchangeably in Blacksmithing due to the availability of materials Items that would have been made from Wrought Iron, are now made from mild low carbon steel, the closest we as modern smiths can find readily available. Thanks for checking out my Blacksmith Shop, Carter Conley
