Damascus Flint Striker Fire Steel Primitive Fire Starter Unique "bragging rights" gift for the Primitive fire making Enthusiast

from $109.99
These twist Damascus flint strikers, sometimes called fire steels are individually hand forged at my blacksmith shop in rural Appalachia. These special strikers start off as an alternating stack of 1084 and 15n20 steel. This stack is then forge welded and drawn out into a long bar, the bar is then forged into a rounded square shape and twisted at a forge welding heat. The twisted bar is then forged flat again to create the twisted pattern. Now that we have our starting material I then forge the actual flint striker entirely by hand at the anvil. After forging and hot stamping my touch mark, I grind away all of the forge scale prior to heat treating. After the quench I allow the strikers to slowly cool before the final clean up and grind prior to etching. After grinding down to clean steel and cleaning with acetone, the strikers are then etched in ferric chloride to reveal the pattern. The strikers are neutralized after the etch and are once again cleaned and hand sanded to 600-1000 grit before being given a mineral oil finish (which is applied cold to avoid ruining the temper). Being a hand forged item, and being twist Damascus each striker will be unique the photos are examples of the Damascus strikers I have already forged. After heat treating I test each striker to ensure they produce sparks. Select a single flint striker or a Full kit including flint, tinder, char-cloth material and a metal char-cloth tin in the variations. Thanks for checking out my one man blacksmith shop!
