Scrolled Dinner Bell Forged to Finish Functional Art

from $54.99
Each unique dinner bell is hand forged individually in rural Appalachia. Starting with a long bar of 3/8" mild steel the ends are forged down into thin tapers, those tapers are then forged into scrolls. Once both of the ends are scrolled, a watering can is used to isolate the heat to specific areas and the legs of the triangle are bent into shape. After forging I quench the corners of the bell (some blacksmiths swear it improves the ring), then use a wire wheel to remove forge scale. Once forge scale is removed the piece is given several coats of paste wax at a low heat to provide a nice looking finish and help prevent rust. Iron is the Traditional 6 year wedding anniversary gift, Steel is the 11th year. The words Iron and Steel are almost always used interchangeably in Blacksmithing due to the availability of materials Items that would have been made from Wrought Iron, are now made from mild low carbon steel, the closest we as modern smiths can find readily available.
